Sustainable Management of Tuna Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation in the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ)

The Ocean Foundation, with support from the Common Oceans Tuna Fisheries Project, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), works to achieve responsible, efficient, and sustainable tuna production and biodiversity conservation in the ABNJ in the face of a changing environment.

The four components to achieve this objective are:

  1. Strengthen management of tuna fisherie
  2. Strengthen Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) to improve fisheries data compliance with Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs), and to tackle Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing
  3. Reduction of environmental impacts of tuna fisheries,
  4. Knowledge Management, Communication, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Gender Mainstreaming
